In today’s digital age, your website is the virtual face of your business. It’s what people will see when they search for you online, and it’s also what you’ll use to promote and grow your new business (via google ads, social media, etc). So it’s extremely important to your success that you have a fast, beautiful, high converting website.
In this guide, we’re going to outline the steps to making an amazing website with minimal work and expense. We’ll be creating this site using WordPress because of it’s extreme versatility and customization options. Now, we’d be lying if we said there weren’t easier to use website platforms (like wix, squarespace, shopify, etc.), but unfortunately, their ease of use comes with a major pitfall: They lack a lot of customization options, and the website will most likely look mediocre and generic. WordPress on the other hand creates a happy medium of versatility and ease of use, and you won’t need to learn any coding.
1. Get a great domain name
Find a domain name that fits your brand/company well, and that consumers will be able to easily recognize and remember. Keep in mind that as you grow a successful business, you’ll be spending thousands of dollars marketing this domain online, as well as on any print marketing (like business cards, flyers, banners, billboards, etc), so make sure to get a GREAT DOMAIN NAME from the start.
2. Setup a WordPress host
You’ll want a web host that offers a managed wordpress package with fast site speeds and solid security. We recommend WPX ($25/month). Once signed up, you’ll need to point your domain to the hosting provider and install a fresh copy of WordPress (the web host will provide instructions for this).
3. Pick a website template
There’s no need to start from scratch. You’ll save yourself a ton of time and money by using a professionally made template that already has the look and feel that you want. THEMEFOREST has thousands of templates to choose from. Here’s some of our favorites (all are under $60):
4. Upload and customize
Upload your wordpress theme to your site, then customize the colors, pictures, and wording to your liking. There’s a ton of information available online about how to do all of this. Or you can find a ton of great freelance developers at ENVATO STUDIO who can do it for you (typically costs between $150-$500). If you do hire it out, we still suggest learning a few basics of wordpress, that way you can make tweaks to your website down the road.
5. Make a logo
We intentionally make this the last step because it’s going to be much easier to create a logo that specifically fits the header and color scheme of your site than it is to plan your site around a specific logo. You can find a ton of great freelance logo designers at FIVERR for under $100. Then just go back and upload the new logo to your website.
That’s it. Now get out there and start marketing and growing your new business!
